JoyRide Journal

June 2010

It is hard to believe that a few short months ago, JoyRide did not even exist.  Back in August of 2009, 40 people met to brainstorm about what their ideal riding program would be like.  We never dreamed that in only 9 months, we would be completing our first spring semester with 30 JoyRiders, 4 horses, 30 volunteers, a facility with a covered arena, offices, restrooms, therapy room and kitchen...and tons of JOY!!!  Thank you to everyone who has helped us get this far!  We look forward to many more years of joy!

Summer JoyRiders

Summer at JoyRide is packed with fun times!  In addition to regular weekly rides, we will have 3 summer camp sessions.  Camp will be on Monday and Wednesday, 9-11 AM, for 2 weeks each.  A few openings are still available in the first (June 14-23) and 3rd (July12-21) sessions.

We also are offering a Family Night of fun with horses for JoyRider families and/or Volunteer families.  This would be one evening (TBD) for 2 hours for 4 people.

If you would like more information or to sign up to join the summer fun, contact Karen A. or Karen G.

Summer Volunteer Opportunities

Got some spare time in your summer schedule?  Take a look at these volunteer opportunities.

1.  Can you spare a few hours this Sunday, June 6, from 9:00-noon, to help build a sensory trail at JoyRide?  A Girl Scout friend of JoyRide has made this her project, but could use a few more hands to get it completed.  Bring work gloves, shovels, ladders, & hammers, if ya' got 'em.  Let Jackie M. know if you can make it.

2.  A few leaders and sidewalkers are needed for our summer classes which runs June 14 - July 30.  Classes are Monday-Thursday, 9:00 AM - Noon.  To set up a training date and time, or for more information, contact Penny or Kassie.

3.  We need a few more dedicated volunteers to help feed the horses on days when there are no classes.  Contact Karen A for more information about joining the Horse Feeding Team.

Jolly Times at the Jamboree

Jamboree attendees enjoy the Aggie Wrangler's performance

Oh, what a night!  The JoyRide Jamboree, held at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club on May 8, surpassed all our wildest dreams in every way!  The sellout crowd enjoyed an amazing performance by the Aggie Wranglers followed by a delicious dinner of beef tenderloin.  The silent and live auctions were full of high demand items.  The music by Melanie Kay and Joe Bergstrom had us all tapping our toes and singing along.  A huge thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers, attendees and auction item donors for helping us net over $44,000 for Joyride!

Special Olympics

Congratulations to the first JoyRide Special Olympics team!  We are so very proud of Jonathan, Martha, Ellie and Steven for bringing home lots of medals from the regional competition.  Martha and Steven went on to compete at the stateSpecial Olympics group games held in Bryan and did a fantastic job against some really tough competition, bringing home even more medals!  Team JoyRide rocks!!
